The Cathedral of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God is situated in the town of Olonets, the Republic of Karelia, at the confluence of the Olonka and Megrega rivers. It was built on the site of the former wooden church. Emperor Alexander I himself prayed in this church when visiting Olonets in 1819. The building of the stone cathedral was completed in 1830. In the beginning of the 20th century the cathedral was closed and in 1974 a local history museum occupied the building. In 1992 it was returned to the church together with the Smolensk icon of the Mother of God.
