Hedgehog is rarely met in Kareli, mostly in its southern parts in latitude of Petrozavodsk city.
Hedgehogs occur in the borders of deciduous and mixed forests and shrubs. Hedgehogs hibernate in the winter. Hedgehogs feed mainly on invertebrates but also consume frogs, snakes, lizards etc.
They are active mostly at night, resting by day under brush piles or in leaf nests in rock crevices and burrows.
Hedgehogs have one breeding season per year.
Hedgehos are of great value for they suppress reproduction of insects and rodents, which are dangerous for the forests.
