Korza

Korza

The village of Korza is one of the oldest settlements of south-western Karelia. The name of the village is mentioned in the archive documents of the 1st half of XVII century.

Originally the village consisted of three houses. In one hundred years time the number of houses increased up to twenty two, and by 1905 there were thirty two houses and 194 people in the village of Korza. The village of Korza is 3 km far from the village of Essoila. The road, connecting large villages of Kroshnozero and Essoila where the main production activities are concentrated crosses this village.

The historical pattern of the village has preserved quite well. The development of the village has not changed since the last century and represents two types: houses located on the both sides of a village street and houses arranged in one line or a row. Many of the houses have preserved the design which is traditional for a Karelian village, i.e. one or two-storied buildings consisted of living apartments, inner porch (“seni”) and places for cattle.

The houses of Korza have been an object for scientific research since 1930-s, when academician R.M. Gabe studied traditions of this village.

There is a small piny grove and a chapel in the outskirts of the village.

The village of Korza is on the main tourist route of Pryazha region to Syamozero. Tourists can walk along an old village street, the size of which is determined by big houses with typical Karelian decorative elements. For better perception it is necessary to restore shabby decorative elements of facades and their colour. At the 1st stage it is necessary to organize a bus stop. Then it is supposed to put an information desk near the car park and publish a booklet about Korza. At the following stages it is reasonable to restore the chapel and put a toilet and a dustbin.
